Pet Grief

Nowadays, we have our cherished photos and videos, but have you ever thought of writing a tribute to your pet’s life or just anecdotes that spark blessed memories?

When I lost my black LabradorRetriever, Jonah, I decided to write down every word he knew. Here’s the list:

  • Army crawl
  • Rollover
  • Go around
  • Spin
  • Speak
  • Whisper
  • Fetch
  • Off
  • Take it
  • Gentle
  • Bang, you’re dead!
  • Sit
  • Stay
  • Come
  • Stand
  • Wait
  • Stop
  • Down
  • Side (AKA Heel left side)
  • Other side
  • Over
  • Under
  • Jump
  • Climb
  • Paws up
  • Gimme five
  • Gimme other five
  • High five
  • Low five
  • Dance
  • Turn
  • Wave
  • Release
  • Are you listening? (cocks his head)
  • Bow
  • Sit pretty
  • Find “BLANK” (any number of identifiable toys)
  • Catch
  • Drop it
  • Scoot
  • Back
  • Return
  • Front
  • Out (goes away from me)
  • Hop in, hop out, hop up
  • Weave
  • Treat? (runs to the cupboard and starts drooling!)
  • Ouch
  • Table
  • Tunnel
  • Kennel
  • Watch me
  • Go to your bed
  • Get your Kong
  • Take BLANK to bed
  • Kiss
  • Wipe paws
  • Chase
  • Tug
  • Leave it
  • Give
  • Blech (spits out a treat)
  • Pet
  • Hold it (treat on the nose)
  • Take it (treat no longer on the nose)
  • Go swim
  • Belly rub (rolls onto his back)
  • Bath time! (slogs to the tub)
  • Who’s there? (Runs to door and barks)
  • Wanna go to the park?  (Goes happy crazy with joy!)

I’m sure he knew even more of what I was saying. I think all dogs do. Whenever I read this list I remember the fun times we had together. He was a great dog. I’m sure yours was too!
